About The Project

The City’s investment in its water delivery infrastructure is key to the delivery of water to its customers for drinking, cooking, cleaning, sanitation, irrigation, recreation, business, industry, and fire suppression. The City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) identifies areas where watermain upgrades, production plant improvements, major distribution system repairs, and expansions are needed. The Program also provides a timeline for completion of the improvements needed and identifies funding for moving projects forward.

The FY24 Citywide Distribution Watermain Improvements project is part of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and consists of the design and construction of potable water distribution pipes and appurtenances for various, non-contiguous watermain replacement projects throughout the central portion of the City’s water service area. The project is part of the City of Tampa’s Progressive Infrastructure Plan to Ensure Sustainability (PIPES). With PIPES, the City of Tampa is investing in Tampa’s tomorrow by taking a proactive approach to renew our infrastructure, prevent breakdowns, and provide long-term, permanent fixes to our water and wastewater systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

This project will replace aging watermains to improve water pressure and quality, enhance overall system reliability, and reduce the risk of future water main breaks and service interruptions. The new watermains will be constructed using updated materials that are able to meet the community’s current and future water demands. The project also includes the installation of new and additional fire hydrants throughout the project area, further enhancing public safety and emergency response capabilities.

Pre-construction activities (survey work/data collection) and construction activities within each project area will be performed simultaneously.

Construction will be active Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with weekend/after-hours work scheduled as needed to minimize traffic disruptions.

Construction activities will require temporary road closures/detours, lane closures/traffic shifts and possible flagging operations. All closures and detours will be clearly marked by signage to direct motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians around construction areas. All closures/detours and other traffic impacts will be posted on the Alerts page of the project website.

Construction activities will temporarily affect normal access to residential and commercial properties as work progresses along each project segment. Residents and businesses will be notified in advance of these activities, and the contractor will work to ensure alternate access is provided. The contractor will also work to minimize the duration of these impacts to the extent possible.

Brief water service interruptions will be required to transfer services over to the new system. Residents and businesses will be notified in advance of these activities. This information will also be posted on the Alerts page of the project website.

The project team will coordinate with garbage/recycling and mail service providers concerning construction activities to ensure no interruption of services. Any service interruptions should be reported by calling the project hotline at 813-530-2202 or emailing the outreach representative for each project area as shown below:
